October at Burke’s is a special month when we celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month.
The Front Office bulletin board displayed profiles of authors, artists, scientists, and professionals of Latinx heritage, and the library had a large display of books for students to check out.
New this year, with the help of the Latinx Parent Affinity Group, students at the Lower School Assembly saw a special flag ceremony. Students of Hispanic or Latinx heritage could participate by standing up when their country or countries’ flag(s) were announced. They also held up their flag(s) and then shared some information about Latinx/Hispanic Heritage Month and why it is celebrated.
In Upper School, the Latinx Affinity Group helped arrange an altar outside the classrooms for observing Dia de los Muertos, the Day of the Dead. During their Upper School Assembly, they educated their peers on the cultural significance of different items placed on the altar and then invited the whole community to contribute photos or notes.

At Burke’s, we recognize the “imperfect” term “Hispanic” has been under national discussion and scrutiny since its creation in the 1980s. We realize no imposed umbrella term is perfect and many may have a personal preference to use their country, region or culture of origin instead of the terms Latino/a, Latinx, or the more recent gender-inclusive and language-inclusive term, Latine.
Burke's mission is to educate, encourage and empower girls. Our school combines academic excellence with an appreciation for childhood so that students thrive as learners, develop a strong sense of self, contribute to community, and fulfill their potential, now and throughout life.
Burke's admits students of any race, color, national and ethnic origin to all the rights, privileges, programs, and activities generally accorded or made available to students at the school. It does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national and ethnic origin in administration of its educational policies, admissions policies, scholarship and loan programs, and athletic and other school-administered programs.
